Let's call a spade a spade,Most Kenyan cars suffer from noisy suspension. Few take it for granted not knowing the dangers.A noisy car suspension can mean you're in for a bumpy ride, especially if the issue isn't addressed. Discover what different sounds mean and what has to be fixed. Most people think of a vehicle’s suspension as the shock-absorbing function: the feature that allows you a comfortable, smooth ride. But when your car begins to sound funny when you go over a speed bump or turn a corner, more than just the comfort of your ride may be at stake. Worn shocks can increase the time and distance it takes you to stop your car in an emergency situation. Industry experts estimate that worn shocks add, on average of 10% to your stopping distance. At any speed, that 10% can translate to a big difference in your ability to avoid an accident.
How car suspension systems work.
Attached to your vehicle’s frame are springs that absorb the jolt of the road’s ups and downs. The shock absorbers do just that: they absorb the shock of the springs’ movement. Around the shock absorber, is a coil spring called a strut. The strut adds to the shock dissipation. These parts work together to deliver a smoother ride and to keep your tires on the road.
Don’t ruin your tires
One clue the suspension system isn't working properly is uneven wear on your tires, since the shocks should be providing even pressure throughout the tire. You’re already going to have to replace suspension parts; don’t add new car tires to the cost.
Is your car making some of these noises?
More importantly, don’t compromise your own safety by driving around with bad shocks and struts. Many noises can emanate from worn or malfunctioning parts and can alert you to problems:
1.A knocking sound when going over bumps or turning corners likely means your worn-out shocks are causing your coil springs to vibrate wildly against your vehicle’s chassis.
2.A grunt or a squeak on bumps or turns means your front steering mechanism is wearing out. This can cause you to lose control of your steering.
3.Bad ball joints in your suspension have been described as sounding like rusty door hinges when you move up and down or back and forth. The effects on above car photo at times.
4.Rattles are harder to diagnose, since many parts of the suspension can make this noise when starting to wear out.
See your local mechanic
Describe any and all unusual noises to your local mechanic. They can help diagnose the problem much quicker this way. Suspension systems not only are complicated; they’re also crucial to your safety. Don't hesitate to visit a repair shop if you notice any of the above noises while driving.
