Daily Iveco 4x4 , 24 forward gears with creeper and 3 diff locks.
Iveco is an Italian brand that is not very popular on our Kenyan roads due to the fact that we source most of our cars from Japan. A few weeks ago Kiambu Governor Hon William Kabogo is said to have attended a prayers event held in Ruiru with an armored Iveco. The vehicle became the talk on social media but little did majority of Kenyans realize that this model is used by the military in Europe ie Belgium, Croitia, Czech Republic, Norway, Spain ,United Kingdom where it goes with the name Panther and Italian Army under the name VTLM Lince (Lynx)(Veicolo-Tattico-Leggero-Multiruolo).These vehicles have been used in war zone like Afghanistan and Lebanon where they protected threats including armour piercing bullets, shell splinters and mines Improvised Explosive Devices to the peace keepers. In Africa Tunisia Military use them too.
The Drive Train is incredibly solid, and everything is well protected. Both front and rear differentials incorporate permanent four-wheel drive with differential locks, with a centre transfer lock all as standard powered by a 3.0 litre 16 valve common rail, dual stage twin turbocharged inter-cooled diesel, producing 170hp/125Kw and 400Nm/295Lbft of torque.
When all three locks are electronically operated from the dash, all wheels, (front, rear and on both sides), are locked to the same speed supplying impressive traction.
The vehicle has a six speed gearbox and the transfer case offers two reduction gears (1:1 and 1:1.3). The net result is 24 forward gears and 4 reverse..The transfer case splits the power 32% to the front and 64% to the rear.
ABS is standard but automatically disengages when any of the three diff locks are activated.
Ordinary Iveco drive train are however available. A photography Company in Kenya has imported a photographers customized beast. It is not armoured like the Military one above but not disappointing either as it can take you anywhere and everywhere in this country. These automobiles are readily available in South Africa.

A look and the new 2014 Probox
By Auto evolution
Hate them or like them but the Japanese automaker has released details of new generation of the PROBOX and Succeed commercial vehicles, which are designed to appeal to the domestic market.
These come 12 year after the first generations arrived on the scene in Japan and bring a host of new features. The models are based on the same platform and are powered by 1.5-liter DOHC four-cylinder engines with CVT gearboxes as standard, which replaces both the 4-speed auto and the 5-speed manual of the older models. Either front- or all-wheel drive is fitted, but the cheaper PROBOX also comes with a small 1.3-liter engine. Toyota has also updated the suspension, adding a trailing link axle at the back, the brakes and stability control.
All engines come with start / stop technology to make them cheap to run and tax, but output varies between 95 and 109 hp, depending on the setup chosen.
The cabin is dotted with storage spaces and the central cup holder can even take a 1-liter square milk box. The front seats of this these 5-door minivan can recline by up to 76 degrees and the rear ones fold flat to create a bigger bay.
Both will launch on September 1st and are built by the Daihatsu factory in Kyoto. Prices for the PROBOX start at 1,317,600 yen, while in the case of the Succeed, they begin at 1,437,382 yen. Weird as they might look, they will play a big role in Japan, also maybe in Peru, Bolivia, where the PROBOX is commonly used as a taxi.
Toyota Probox
By Karuga wa Njuguna
Toyota Probox has been one of the most popular car in Kenya for the last five years. The car was introduced by Toyota for the Japanese market in August 2002. It is a small station wagon designed for commercial use as a delivery vehicle and the predecessor of Toyota 102/103 . Toyota Probox has a simple engine and come mostly 1500 cc engines while a few are 1300 cc VVTI petrol .They are five speed manual and four speed automatic transmission while it's a five door station wagon. It has a simple dashboard with basic features like the speedometer, a digital odometer, the air conditioning system and the radio. The rear seats can be removed to create more carriage space. The car seats are mainly fabric. There are no leather seats for this model. This makes it more of a factory car than a luxury car. The car has only one shortcoming that is is not manufactured with leaf springs to carry more weight that Kenyans would love. It has coil springs but still a strong car though it is much lighter. It is worth noting that there is another model known as Toyota Succeed which has lights bordering the number plate area. The Probox has no lights on the rear door and has a more serious look while Succeed assumes a sporty look but basically the same car.
This is a good car for a starter businessman since one can get one for between 350k to 650k.Toyota Probox has found it very rough in Kenyan big towns because most of the owners are small businessmen who are really misusing and abusing this car which is actually taking the punishment. The worst hit is in Kisii town, some Probox belonging to police officers and nicknamed 'Olwenda' ply town service routes carrying up to 12 passengers. They pick their passengers from the heart of the town in full glare of police. In Nairobi's Umoja estate they ferry upto 16 bags of charcoal to the venders while others supply meat in the capital.
Miraa traders are also inlove with the car. They ferry Miraa to small towns using this 'ground missile' which is often driven so fast and dangerously on Kenyan roads. Taxi drivers in major towns also use this car in their business and is also loved by them due to the low consumption of fuel. Security companies have also been using using as chase cars for the cash in transit vans and proved to be a beast of burden.
While small businessmen like the car, many people hate the car. In the capital Nairobi these cars are always driven recklessly in a hurry to deliver goods or people. At the police roadblock you will never pass with out being stopped and searched for any illegal goods especially if the car has tinted windows. Most owners of this model live in fear for theft as this car is a hot cake in Kenya and neighboring countries. Few years ago Turkana Police have unearthed a theft syndicate in northern Kenya targeting Toyota Probox vehicles which are sold in South Sudan.
However the 2014 model has arrived
0
The Probox vehicle models stolen from other areas are hurriedly driven to far away Turkana County and later sold to the neighbouring country.Due to the porous nature of Kenya’s border in the north, criminals from South Sudan easily cross over to Turkana where they find ready supply of stolen vehicles.Investigations by a local media house (The Standard) established the Kenyan criminals are daring enough as they drive the stolen vehicles to Turkana without changing the number plates. The syndicate sells stolen vehicles to their counterparts across the border at throwaway prices in order to keep the members flush with cash. The criminals target fairly new Probox vehicles, and sell them for between Sh350,000 and Sh400,000.Apart from South Sudan, there is also high demand for Toyota Probox vehicles in major towns in Turkana, especially in Lodwar, Kakuma, and Lokichoggio.
Want a delivery car, then this is the car to but but make a point of securing it by all means.
Incase you missed ,The monster is back in Nairobi after the World trip!

Africa to Brazil in a 1997 Toyota Land Cruiser VX 80 series
Florian Keller, the managing director of Enchanting Africa, leaves on Saturday for his 200-day trip from Kenya to Brazil using an old car.
The 40,000 km trip will take him to 25 countries. These are Ethiopia, Djibouti, Oman & Emirates, through Arabia, Iran, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan & Kazakhsta, Russia, Mongolia, South Korea United States, Mexico & Guatemala,Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica & Panama. He will also go through Central America, Colombia, Ecuador & Peru, from Cartagena to Machu Picchu, Peru, Bolivia & Brazil. The final leg will be through Machu Picchu to Rio de Janeiro.
Keller will be driving his adorable monster, a 1997 Toyota Land Cruiser VX 80 series.
But why use such an old vehicle for a long trip? Keller choose this vehicle from his experience in his adventures. In 2010 he drove to the World Cup held in South Africa in another Land cruiser VX 80 and he never got disappointed.
This type of vehicle is strong and the main engine in the 80-series was the 6-cylinder 4.2-litre turbo diesel. The first models in the 80-series came with a 1HD-T-type engine, which produced 165PS/37.2kgm. With the minor change in 1995, this engine was replaced by the 1HD-FT-type, a 24-valve power unit that produced 170PS/38.7kgm. The diesel engine progressed from the turbo spec 1HD-T-type to the 1HD-FT-type, which was also a 4-valve per cylinder type.
In the power train, the transfer gained a central differential, and all but one grade had a full-time 4x4 system. A switch on the instrument panel enabled you to go from 2WD to high-range 4WD, while a lever on the floor enabled you to directly shift into LO range 4WD. This so-called HF2A transfer has electronic controls for locking the central differential when wanted to, so that according to ground conditions even in part-time 4x4 mode you could drive effectively on bad roads.
Moreover, there was also a maker option for an electronic differential lock mechanism on the front and rear axle, which enables you to travel even further on bad roads. In the suspension, leaf springs were replaced with coil springs in front and rear. This maintains strong durability, while at the same time improving driving comfort and steering stability. There were 3 arms supporting the axle in the front, and 5 in the rear. Each arm had rubber bushings on the pivot portion, which were designed to provide strong axle support as well as reduce shocks and vibrations coming from rough road surfaces. The overall result was improved riding comfort.
This particular vehicle has undergone some slight modification in readiness to this trip. It has been fitted with a strong grill that has a winch just in case the vehicle got stuck. It has also been fitted with all-terrain tryes and two extra spare tyres.
The top has a carrier with four jerrycans of 20 litres each to carry his diesel fuel. The vehicle has a repair kit on board which includes a power battery fitted at the back with an inverter to convert power from direct current to alternate current for use in inflating car tyres, powering the photo printer that Keller intends to carry on his trip and also for an extra heater which will be of great use in Mongolia and Russia, where he expect to face minus 20 degrees of temperatures.
This will be the most challenging areas of his adventure. All this cost Sh600,000, including a gearbox and steering box.
Another cost incurred is the vehicle passport, which is known as Carnet de Passages. The Carnet allows travellers to temporarily import their vehicles, or other items of value such as broadcasting equipment, without having to leave a cash deposit at the border. It is, in essence, an international guarantee for payment of customs duties and taxes to a government should the vehicle or item not be re-exported from that country. Persons who temporarily import their vehicles or items into countries where the Carnet is required must agree to obey the laws and regulations of that country and particularly the conditions of temporary importation.
The Carnet contains relevant information about the items or vehicle – make, model, colour, engine capacity, seating capacity, registration number, owner and value. In order to obtain a carnet, the owner of the items is required to provide a security based on the age and market value of the items. Generally, three types of security are acceptable from motoring organisations. These are cash bond, as in premiums, banker's letter of indemnity, or insurance policy.
Motorists in Kenya can typically obtain a Carnet de Passages en Douane from Automobile Association of Kenya, valid for one year.
To calculate the premium, the vehicle is insured three times it's value. The balance is refundable on presentation of the booklet, which is usually stamped at every border point, and presentation of the same vehicle to the motorist association.
We wish Florian Keller a safe trip!

Honda has been crowned the most reliable car manufacturer for the eighth year in a row, according to research by WhatCar? and Warranty Direct. The Japanese brand has enjoyed Michael Schumacher-like dominance in the poll for almost a decade, after being confirmed top of 38 manufacturers in the latest poll of 50,000 live Warranty Direct policyholders. This is not something which will go down well to many Kenyans who feel and believe other popular brands in the market to be the best yet they have never been voted in other markets. Their VTEC engines have become very famous as they continue to advance them.VTEC stands for Variable Valve Timing and Lift Electronic Control. Honda developed this variable valve train system in order to offer efficiency and power in smaller engines. VTEC systems use two camshaft profiles, one for bottom end economy and another for top end performance. The story of the engine has its origins in the 1980s. Back then, Honda was a fairly new car company, building on its reputation as a builder of the CB street bike series. Making a small engine with lots of power was believed to be the key for Honda to crack the global market. Apart from cars they also make robots, motorbikes, power equipments, outboard engines, boats, jets and solar panels.Honda is also the largest engine manufacturer in the world and ranked among the world's top 20 brands

How safe are our Kenyan buses?
Years ago accident on Narok road that killed over 40 people and the roof disintegrated has become and aye opener of how the bus bodies fabrications are done.In Kenya there are several body builders but the top are Kenya Vehicle Manufactures of Thika and Labh Singh Harnam Singh Ltd ,the largest bus and coach manufacturer in East and Central Africa among others.
To start with,in this country buses are built on commercial vehicle chassis which are usually have higher frame chassis than other commuter buses used in the world. This simply means that no dealer sells a chassis designed for a bus hence compromising the passenger comfort, safety and vehicle stability.
When we now come to the body building, you will find quite a number of mushrooming inexperienced body builders who ignore the safety standards of commuter buses by making cheap body structures that even leak during the rainy seasons to save cost to some bus owners/operators to between 3 to 4 million shillings on the big buses.According to Kenya Vehicle Manufacturers there are set standards in the traffic act as well as Kebs bus standards which seems to have been ignored to cut cost but have brought in significant suffering to hard working Kenyans.Due to the greed, some opt to have top carriers on a weak body which is usually overloaded with goods instead of using the bottom cargo boots designed for intercity buses. This makes the bus to sway and swing on it's high frame at the bends always losing control and stability.According to one bus builder who declined to be named,a normal bus should be about 12 feet high but then they extend the top carrier making the bus 13 to 14 feet high. Some bus operators like Easy Coach,Modern Coast,Mash Poa have realized the dangers of the top carriers and have done away with them.
The bus should always meet afew standards like,

1]Roll over protection
2}Front Impact protection
3}Side Impact protection ,
among others.During a bus or coach rollover without the above, the occupant will have a larger distance from the centre of rotation as compared to that of a car occupant. This is what makes a rollover accident extremely fatal and explains the previous statistics in the country. The side windows get broken, the risk of passenger ejection and injury increases. The most common body regions injured in a rollover, when no ejection occurs, are the head, the neck and the shoulder. Crash analysis indicated that injury in rollover crashes can be caused by the impact of the occupants on the side panel, on the luggage rack and also by the effects of occupant interaction
Currently there are safe buses in the country.Foton Buses introduced in the country but imported are coming with all the safety features including the roll over cast,ABS brake system,Three safety hatches on top of the bus,Six safety hammers to break the glass during an emergency among others. The buses are on a passenger chassis and have gone for clash test .They have met the European regulation 'ECE R66' .Foton buses cost of a 47 seater is going for 6.5 million while 57 seater is going for 8.6 million. This price could be the reason why bus operators go for the locally assembled which are cheaper.GM too have locally assembled safe buses.

Today the European regulation “ECE R66” is in force to prevent catastrophic
consequences of such roll-over accidents thereby ensuring the safety of bus and coach passengers .The purpose of the ECE R66 analysis is to
ensure that the superstructure of the vehicle have the sufficient strength that the residual space during and after the rollover test on complete vehicle is unharmed.
The envelope of the vehicle’s residual space is defined by creating a vertical transverse plane within the vehicle. The tests have also shown that the new
safety roll-bar structure assures controllable crash energy absorption which
in turn increases the safety of vehicle occupants. These are the standards which should be enforced in Kenya if we want to save Kenyans
